Myths about BMI
BMI is useful in specific ways. And far too many of the myths about it influence the way we talk, think, and counsel about weight.
Myth 1: BMI measures body fat.
BMI measures only height and weight, using an indirect formula to determine body fat. Because muscle mass takes up less space than fat, someone with a lot of muscle can have a high BMI and still have a low percentage of fat. On the other hand, someone with less muscle can have a normal BMI and yet carry a higher percentage of body fat.
Myth 2: A "healthy" BMI is 18.5-24.9 for everyone.
Although BMI is a reliable general guideline, age, ethnicity, and sex can influence what is healthy. For instance, as you age, you lose muscle mass, which can make your ‘healthy’ weight slightly lower. Ask your healthcare professional for more specifics.
Myth 3: A high BMI automatically means poor health.
Although a high BMI is thought to raise the risk of some health problems, it is not necessarily an accurate gauge of health. Much depends on a range of factors, including diet, exercise, genes and body fat distribution.
Myth 4: A low BMI always means good health.
Not true. Being underweight can be just as bad for your health, as it predisposes you to conditions such as diminished immunity, osteoporosis and a range of nutrient deficiencies. So, do your best to achieve a healthy BMI without getting sucked into confusing diets that promise results. You need only stay within a healthy BMI range for your own unique body.
Myth 5: BMI is useless.
Objectively not true. BMI will never be an accurate predictor of mortality risks in single individuals, but it isn’t meant to. It is meant to be a baseline to compare against. It can be used as a starting point for identifying potential health concerns, especially when applied across larger populations.
Here are some alternative measures to consider alongside BMI for a more comprehensive picture:
- Waist circumference measures central fat around the waist, which is a better indicator of health risks than overall body fat.
- Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) estimates body fat percentage using electrical currents, which is more accurate than BMI but still not exact.
- Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides precise measurements of body fat, muscle, and bone, and is the most accurate way to assess body fat.
